Choosing ERAS headshots and practice photos
ERAS photo size
ERAS asks for a photo of 2.5 × 3.5 inches at 150 dpi, which works out to 375 × 525 pixels. The file-size cap has changed over the years, so check the AAMC's documents page for your season before you export. Crop one of your headshots to that 5:7 shape with your head and shoulders centered, save it as a JPEG and check the file size before you upload.
Suit or white coat for ERAS
A suit is the usual choice for ERAS headshots, since applicants are not yet the program's doctors and the photo sits beside your application. Pick business professional attire on a gray studio or soft color backdrop, and keep the expression calm and friendly. Attending physicians more often wear the white coat on practice and hospital pages, where patients expect to see the doctor they will meet.
Where to use your doctor headshots
Use one headshot across your practice website, the hospital's find-a-doctor page, Doximity, Healthgrades, Zocdoc and LinkedIn, so patients see the same face everywhere. Directories show small square crops, so pick a chest-up shot with a plain background for them. Save the clinic and hospital backgrounds for your own bio page, where the photo is larger and the setting shows patients where they will see you.

If you choose the white coat, the headshots show it over a shirt, sometimes with a tie or a stethoscope. Check that the stethoscope sits naturally and the collar looks right before you pick a favorite. No name embroidery or hospital logo is added, so nothing has to match your real coat. Can I use an AI headshot for my ERAS application?
The photo should be a recent, accurate likeness of you. Pick one that looks like you on interview day and check the AAMC's current photo instructions. Every file carries Content Credentials stating that AI generated it. Nurses and nurse practitioners on your team can use our nurse headshots.
Do I need to wear a white coat in my selfies?
No. Take your selfies in whatever you wear off shift. The white coat, scrubs or suit is chosen in the order and appears in the headshots.
Will the headshots look like me?
Each headshot is compared with your selfies, and ones that don't match are screened out. Go through the gallery the way a patient would and keep the photos that clearly look like you.
How much do doctor headshots cost?
Doctor headshots cost $35 for 40 (Basic), $45 for 60 (Standard) or $75 for 100 at 2048 × 3072 pixels (Executive). You pay once and nothing renews.
Can I add my name, credentials or a hospital logo?
Not in the photo. The headshots are made without text, badges or logos. Add your name and credentials beside the photo on the page where you use it.
What happens to my photos?
We delete your selfies 7 days after delivery and your headshots 30 days after delivery. Download your ERAS crop and directory photo before then, or remove everything sooner from your account. Details are in the privacy policy.
What if I don't like them?
Not happy with the set? Email us within 14 days of delivery, as long as you haven't downloaded any headshot, and we redo it or refund it in full. See the refund policy.
